High Blood Pressure Q & A

What is high blood pressure?

Also called hypertension, high blood pressure is a condition in which the blood flow through your arteries is too great. This puts a strain on the walls of your arteries and exposes you to a range of health complications, including:

  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Aneurysm
  • Dementia
  • Heart failure

It’s important to monitor your blood pressure levels and take action if they start to climb. And because high blood pressure is an extremely common condition, RevaMed Primary Care Associates checks each of their patient’s blood pressure on a regular basis.

Regular blood pressure checks are important because high blood pressure usually doesn’t exhibit any symptoms. In fact, it’s often referred to as the silent killer because it can go unnoticed for years even as it strains your body.

When you visit RevaMed Primary Care Associates for any type of appointment, within minutes, they check your blood pressure so you can rest easy knowing your arteries aren’t under excessive stress.

How is blood pressure checked?

Determining your blood pressure levels is a fast, easy, completely noninvasive process. Your RevaMed Primary Care Associates practitioner wraps a cuff around your arm. The cuff measures two readings: The pressure on the walls of your blood vessels when your heart beats (systolic pressure) and the pressure between beats (diastolic pressure).

Your reading comes out as two numbers that denote pressure in milligrams of mercury (mm Hg). The readout is your systolic and diastolic pressure separated by a slash.

Healthy blood pressure levels are anything under 120/80 mm Hg. If your levels are anything above that, the RevaMed Primary Care Associates team works with you to make the changes needed to restore healthy pressure levels within your blood vessels.

What is the treatment for high blood pressure?

Lifestyle changes are a powerful tool in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. Some of the changes RevaMed Primary Care Associates most often recommends for their patients include:

  • Eating less salt
  • Drinking less alcohol
  • Exercising regularly
  • Maintaining a healthy weight (including losing weight, if necessary)
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet

If lifestyle changes alone are insufficient to reduce your blood pressure, RevaMed Primary Care Associates helps you find the right medication to help you reach a healthy blood pressure with minimal side effects.
